when u win an argument against someone who thinks they know everything
I have a parson jack Russell terrier. He’s a really good boy but he loves mischief more than he does good behavior treats. Lately that usual spark in his eyes is slowly fading and turning cloudy. He could clear a 3 foot fence with little ease but now he lets out exhausted grunts when going up the stairs. The little black patches around his eyes are turning white and he resembles a little old man more and more each day.
When i got home from school today, he woke up and really slowly came upstairs to greet me. Exhausted from his 15 foot trek, he leaned against me and let out a happy snorting sound, while his tail wagged on. He looked up at me, with his hair all disheveled, and stretched against me.
“wanna come up?” i asked. in the past, when id say that, he’d run off defiantly. he stayed, so i reached out and put my hands around his recently pudgy belly and scooped him into my lap. In the past, if i had gotten that far, he’d fight back. He was too busy digging a hole or chewing on a dictionary (or my favorite, aimlessly running back and fourth) to sit on someone’s lap.
But not today.
He looked at me, then the wall, then sat down on my lap and laid his body against my chest and let out a big sigh. I held him really tight and never ever wanted to let go.
Today i really started to realize that my puppy’s 11 years old. It was only a number to me before. I went about my daily business, ran off to work or school then retreated to my room…all the while just expecting that crazy Rascal would always be there. I was taking him for granted this whole time.
I guess the point of this rant is that i love my dog so much and its hard to believe he won’t be here forever. It’s cruel that something can grow to be such a part of you, yet only be there for a short time.
Then again who knows. Maybe he’ll break a record and live to be 25 :)
